Hi All

I've recently got into speaker building (PA type) and i'm puzzled about something..

I'm Looking for crossovers for some Mid/Tops i plan on building
Lots of places i've looked only offer a maximum crossover RMS power of 600w..
However i've seen more and more passive speakers offering 800w or even 1000w RMS...

What can these companies be doing?? 2 crossovers ?? custom builds?? how can i get some thing thats more 800w??

Thanks in advance for any wisdom

It gets really expensive to build passive crossovers to handle that kind of power, at this point it becomes more cost effective to use active crossovers and extra amplifiers.

It's called lying!   LOL

Or - ok, maybe better, exaggeration of the true power handling figures, down to the way "Power" is defined re. speakers, as "RMS Power" is really a difficult thing to define accurately with regard to speakers. Some use peak, others average, others programme.

There are several definitions. Look up "AES speaker power".

And, oh yes - forget power. Always look for a speaker with better SPL at the frequency range you want to cover. Those speakers that boast 1000's of watts are usually the crappest, with very low SPL.  Dead

Yeah i get the AES/RMS bit

So my next curiosity could be if a crossover is rated at 600w RMS, you think it could be more like 700/800 AES (say recieving a HP signal above 80/100hz)??

There is no such thing as off the shelf crossover. It need to be specifically designed for your box and your box only.

No, the power rating is derived from the crossover components voltage ratings so it is what it is regardless of the input signal bandwidth.

Yes - I don't know how many times I've had people bringing in cabs for repair with burned out or damaged passive crossovers.

The coils and resistors often overheat from overdriving them. Or the solder holding the components melt! Trying to get that "600W" or "800W" output as advertised. I'd say that anything over 200/300W should go active. Just for the power wasted - and anomalies introduced by a passive crossover.

Most of the Speaker brands sold on the major internet sites are LIARS. They will put a 250 watt speaker in a box and call it 1000 watts or even 2000 watts. Major FRAUD.....
