Anyone know how to delete some of the system files on my Mac? it's currently at 246 gb and thats a lot of wasted space. It seems to be an issue but when I've done some online research most say download cleanmymac or some other program like it which I'm weary of doing...

First thing i would do is get a copy of "Carbon copy cloner" (yes you can use Linux and DD etc, but CCC is easy and doesn't have the nick name "DISK DESTROYER" you can use this to clone your main drive to a USB/Firewire/Thunderbolt external drive.
Make a bootable clone of your internal drive, restart the Mac, hold ALT and boot off the external volume to check you have a full copy. You can then address your missing 1/4 tTB Personally, I'd get an 8GB USB stick and make a OsX bootloader (Follow any of the online tutorials, but but with a download and 1 line in shell you have a bootable OsX stik) and blast the main partition, re-load my apps and just restore my data from the backup you wisely made earlier... BUT, if you don't have access to installers for some apps or don't fancy an epic mission then witht eh backup unplugged start "cleaning up" with cleanmymac or similar. To have 246Gb of crap you must have a fairly old mac (or piles of Adobe temp files in your user root) so a clean install would work well... |
