I've noticed a few brands are doing a central vertical channel in their grilles. Is this functional or cosmetic? The widths of the channel seem to be about 4 or 5 cm which would have a 1/2 wavelenth of about 14-16k ish. Is it to improve the CD characteristics beyond what the horn can do? or Is it just to further improve stiffness of the grille?

"Is it just to further improve stiffness of the grille?" I'd vote for that. The channel will make the grill stiffer & less inclined to vibrate. |

As above it probably improves the stiffness. They may well do it to allow them to use thinner (cheaper) sheet in the first place.
