Hey guys,
Recently finished our soundsystem and we did some testing and tuning 2 months ago at an indoor location and we were quite happy with the results. Last week we got an inquiry to do an outdoor event for approx. 150 guests. This is a bit on short terms so we don't really have time to test and set the dsp for an outdoor event. As we're quite new to all of this we're wondering what the impact on the sound quality would be if we ran the system on the same dsp settings for the outdoor event as for the indoor testing? It will be the first time we're gonna use it outdoors. For info we run 2x hog scoops, 2x ES18BPH and 2x Orbit4's Also, any other tips to take into account for a first event would be very welcome! Cheers

How did you do the measuring? Saying that, the eq'ing may need to be tweaked a bit to compensate for losing said room acoustics when moving outside. |

What Earplug said
I'd add that indoors especially, the audience itself, tends to change the acoustics quite a bit (as can temperature) so its often necessary, to tweak the HF a bit, as the room fills up. Less of a problem outdoors, but depends on speaker placement. But manual adjustments by ear, are always necessary IMO. A little tip for EQ - if you are not so familiar with what each frequency sounds like - Start at the bottom of the EQ, and one frequency at a time, apply full gain so you can hear which frequency you are adjusting. Then set it to boost or cut as sounds right, before moving up to the next frequency. This technique, helps to identify problem frequencies, that need to be cut or boosted etc. That said, another common problem I've seen, is engineers trying to EQ or balance a system, with processors located on stage (i.e. behind the stacks) so they are not actually hearing, what it sounds like out front, as they make adjustments. So ideally want to position all your processing FOH (i.e. in front of the stacks) but if that's not possible/practical, then make small adjustments at a time, and keep going out front, to check what it sounds like. Just my 2p

And test with your jam :-)
A couple of tracks you know exactly what they sound like. Take a pair of good headphones with your phone and you can A-B test, if stress and grumpy people make you “blank”

Court test disc 31 band pink noise tones with a cheap dB meter or your ears ,is surprisingly effective.

If you have it sounding good outdoors, then it’ll sound pretty much as good as it’s going to get indoors.
The vast majority of indoor problems are reflection based, and that’s solved by better aiming and placement, not by EQ. You can’t fix time problems with a level adjustment. If you want to practice what frequencies sound like for EQ purposes, there’s plenty of apps for phones to do that like HearEQ. Even pro engineers at touring level need practice; like any other skill, it falls away if you don’t do it for a long time. Edited by toastyghost - 10 September 2021 at 8:42pm |
