Funnily enough, a DC PSU could work, even if the thing is expecting AC. It depends on the input circuitry. If it just uses a bridge rectifier then no problem. If their is some other doubler or circuit to generate +/- rails, etc. then more difficult.

Maybe open the thing & see what's there.  Smile

Update. I e-mailed the Alto support guys and got a reply today:-

The earlier models were an 18vAC psu but apparently this fell foul of an  EU directive. Thus later models were re-designed to use 18vDC.
If it's got wheels or tits it's gonna cost a fortune

That's quite odd. I don't think I've ever seen a socket marked as AC, but also shows  the polarity like that. It's just asking for trouble!
