just bought a few sheets of birch this morning ( ).. and the place reckoned they're running out and they don't know where the next batch will come from.. so they recommended eucalyptus ply as an alternative.

they showed me some 12mm as an example... the face looked ok, didn't look to have voids in it, the plys may have been a bit thicker than in birch.

anyone used it or looked at alternatives if there is a proper drought coming?

I have used 13 lamination 18mm eucalyptus ply about 10 years ago and it “can” be Ok, but still not as good as decent birch.

The lot I got cheap was fairly decent with very few voids (only found one in the 10 sheets), however a mate of mine had a batch that had a quite few voids.

Its not as nice to work with as birch, however I’ve worked with a lot worse!!

I thought that poplar was meant to be the best stand-in in the UK. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If it wasn't so bloody expensive I'd like to try a build using Tricoya (could build it, fit a weatherised speaker and leave it in the woods :) ).

poplar is fine for internals - in fact better IMO with a higher stiffness:weight ratio. It does dent though - but there is birch face poplar core ply available for external panels.
