Ive just moved from the UK to Australia. Baltic Birch Ply is super hard to get over here... especially in the west. I've heard that Poplar ply is a good alternative for box building.

Thoughts?

It's not... Not nearly as strong.
I would not build a touring box with it.

You can get Birch ply in Aus no problem (not sure if its baltic or not but its certainly good enough for making boxes), just need to find the right sort of timber merchant. You could go to plyco if you want to spend more money than you should but it can be found from around $250 AUD a sheet for B/BB at the moment.

Bear in mind that lower grades are fine for box building if you are planning on paint / polyurea etc, buying CP/BB grade for instance is often a good deal cheaper, B grade is only needed really for fine finished furniture. The internal layup and density is exactly the same.

poplar is okay for internals (weight for weight it is actually stiffer than birch) but external panels should be birch as it is far more dent-resistant.

Ok, great to know it doesn't need to be Baltic and B/BB Birch will do the job! Much appreciated, love your system btw @fat_brstd. Hope to pop east and hear it one day.

That is a pretty good price tbh, I would go ahead and get what you need ordered.

The other thing that is worth a look on is FB marketplace, especially if you only need a couple of sheets. Its quite common to find sheets of Birch cheaper on there but you will want to check it out in person and if you don't have a big enough vehicle/trailer to pick it up don't even bother.
