   Would like to build a set of 2 studio monitors / home cinema speakers atm, would like to add more in the future for surround applications. Small and cheap is good as im a skint student. my existing monitors are 16"x9"x8" so something around there would be good. Power wise they dont need to be big at all. max 150w i reckon

What do you guys reccomend?

	The prerequisite specs for a studio monitor are vastly different from a theatre speaker A studio monitor is all about fidelity and correct integration of components to give a flat sound A home theatre system is all about speech intelligibility and bass extension and hyped sound is ok. Decide which of those things you need. BTW cheap is almost never good, save your money and make something decent Bill Fitzmaurice has plenty of decent plans for home theatre, Walts Stepped Horn is a good choice for sub too. If it were my choice I would use something like the TLAH or SLA on Bill Fitz site for midtops, and either a Tuba HT from the same site or Walts stepped horn on www.speakerstore.nl Stu

	Home theatre sucks without a sub IMO, your mains are somewhat less important at least for now, I would just build the sub and get the necessary processing gear to set it up in conjunction with your existing mains and then work on upgrading your tops as and when. Stu

	if its purely for home theater go for something that drops sily low and just use some half decent hi speakers above

	Trying to build a studio monitor while you are a skint student is not a good omen. Small and cheap will not get you a reference speaker (studio monitor) I suppose you could build a cheap DJ monitor out of odd bits, but that's about it.
