correct me if im wrong but i thought if you bought a domain name, you own that domain name and nobody else can have a website with that domain name?

i bought a .com domain name last month and typed in that that address into  the search bar, came up with some random advertisment page.

type it in tonight and now there is some random speaker company in america with the same name and HAS MY DOMAIN NAME!!!

whats going on???
The only good system is a sound system.

For .co.uk Nominet would be your port of call. Don't know for .com.
 Anybody know who's in charge?

if you let your domain registration expire and you receive a small amount of regular traffic to your site it will be bought by some crappy cyber squatting advertisement group.
happened to me a while ago. Sometimes they will ransom the domain back to you. but usually not.
not really much you can do except if its like a trademarked name or your a huge company.
If you believe you still had the rights contact your registrar
