Ive got a '98 escort estate and im in the process of installing a farily substantial sound system in it. Everything was going well until i hit the fairly major problem of supplying 50 amps to the amplifier. I cant find any way of getting the power lead from the battery to the cabin area of the car. can anyone help me with this at all? Cheers

escort hmmm.. i had 4 guage cable running through my rs turbos without a problem, i used an existing hole through the firewall, u may need 2 remove a gromit which covers the holes, failing this drill a hole but watch it and be carefull have some1 watching as it comes though the other end so u dont hit anything in the engine bay, make sure u use a gromit around the edges of ur hole as the freshly cut metal will cut through the casing of ur power cable with ease then u gota fire on ur hands!! dont chance it just do the job properly one time. Any other help let me know ive done loads of installs. |

Make sure you repaint the hole if you do drill. Escorts are not the most rust resistant of beasts. Keep away from the battery tray too, that area is more prone to corrosion than any other (says he on his 3rd escort and 4th replacement battery tray) BTW, i can fit 4.5Kw of PA in the back of my Escort estate (plus 1Kw of monitors) I've always been tempted to try to power it whilst in the ve-hical |

Yup, cudnt agree with you more, all escorts go near the battery trays and sometimes u even get the rain cuming thru into the passenger footwell |

Whilst people give the humble Escort a load of grief, they're bloody good cars. I've spent less than £3.5k since 1996 on all 3 including all maintenance, mot's, tyres, etc. The latest is a v.good condition 1992 1.8 Zetec Ghia which cost £600 with 100k on the clock & FSH from a Ford mechanic (previous owner). I've spent £280 on it this year which is the first since purchase in 2002. Full exhaust system - < £60 f**k yeah!!
Interested to know where you'd put a 'substantial sound system' in the estate though. On my old Mk4 estate i had some Pioneer 6x9's in the tailgate (with a little cutting of metal) which got nicked with the whole panel one saturday. I've got 16.5cm 2 way JBL's (they were dirt cheap ok!) on adaptors in the doors and boot sides (where the originals were) Looked at some underseat subs but didn't bother. Difficult doing a sub job whilst retaining the versatility of the state. Still wanna get my 2 double 18 subs in the boot connected to my 50w amp. At 101db at 1w/1m (each box) minimum they're gonna kick up some noise! |

Ran it with my home made 150w RMS amp, omg .... Can fit three of these in the boot, and i'll be getting a new amp oneday which should do about 280watts into the 2.66 ohm load. Edited by Flipside |
