I want to build something like an x12 or 15 for a school project.  Just wondering if I use a piezo, does that mean I wont need a passive crossover in it?  How will a piezo go?

Personally if i'm going to build a cab like the above mentioned i'll use a compression driver, like you said if it's for a school project, search for a cheap one & learn about it's frequencies & such forth then move on from there, but seriously forget the piezo.
Smile, the worst is yet to come.

I just recently came across those eminence beta coxial speakers.  Instead of having a compression driver, can i just use two 12" coxials in each enclosure for the X12 design?  Or even have one normal beta at the bottom, and then a coxial beta at the top?  I really dont want to be mucking around with crossovers.

You will still need a crossover. Build it properly and get done.
