After finally getting this to "fully" work on my "play" PC, I have considerably more respect than previously.
It doesn't have the slick Install/HW detection of a Decent Linux, but will definetly be more stable, and have better SMP support. Registered versions also permit enhanced Direct net updates from SUN. It seems OpenSolaris has larger base/support device drivers in progress, which also helped me get Solaris 10 working fully. Anyone else using this for more mainstream use? EDIT:We can go into Linux/OSX etc in aonther thread chaps... EDIT:Would also be nice to see which music apps can be ported to this.. Edited by levyte357 - 15 October 2009 at 2:49pm |

Historically, SunOS (later known as Solaris) was typically stuffed into more universities, as opposed to the more corporate System V variants. Ironic, as SunOS is based on BSD, which was developed at University of California. This results in more students gaining exposure to Solaris, and continuing as professionals. Hence very strong support of Solaris by the coolest GNU/OSS "free stuff". More importantly, the environment provided by Solaris X86 is exactly the same as Solaris on big iron boxes in corporates. Meaning, playing with it at home, makes you more skilled at work. Edited by levyte357 - 16 October 2009 at 12:21pm |
