The horn part in the MT 122 is tricky to do with all angles. I have plans to build 4 single boxes like DOM did. The Porn Horn is done in glasfiber. Why not make the horn part in the MT 122 the same way? Is it done before? Comments?! |

I take your silence as a fact no one have done this, well someone has to be a first! To bad its to cold to do the fiberglas work right now need like 16-20 degrees and now its -3 here. And Ive got now option of working inside with this, could work with a good construction fan but the house would be unliveable. Just writing again to see if any of you get some comments on this project?! Does it seem like a completly wacked idé?

I'm planning to use glass fibre to build some horns with phase plugs
for 8" drivers. My problem at the moment is what to use to make
the mould. That's going to take far longer than just fabricating
the horns.
If you can make an MT122 from wood then take a plaster of paris mould of it, you could smooth it over, take out any sharp edges then use that to build the horns on. |

you make the master from melomine board or moisture resistant (green) mdf. and use any car body filler to give you the curves if needed |

i think the mt122 is compromised in favour of being practicable to fabricate
from wood. the porn takes the next step in flare and round/square transition etc because it is made from fibreglass. emulating the 122 flare in fibreglass or plastic would be a step backwards in my opinion. james. |

James is right, if you're going to go to the hassle of making a mould
and using fibreglass, you might as well having a go at something a
little more exciting!
If you haven't already, check out Centauri's DIY pages and especially the phase plug stuff. Adding a simple phase plug might extend the top end to a useful amount, not essential with a good 2" above though. The things I've been playing around with on paper involve elipsoidal horns with simple cone shaped phase plugs. Use Hornresp to find out what throat, mouth and horn lengths would work well for your driver (what are you planning to use?) I'd be interested to work with you on this further if you're interested. |

Was planning to use P. Audio SN 12B Neo. Yeah i had a look at Centauri's page but coulnt seem to find any plans maybe you need to email the guy? mt122 with the SN 12B Neo done in singel boxes and in glass fibre aswel will make them very easy to deal with when they are done :).. pretty much on the edge of starting the negative mould (?) for the horns. james you dont think its worh it?

If you can have some flat parts you can always place an aluminium skin
on both sides of the end product for much improved stiffness without
adding much weight. Also expanded structural foam is your friend.

the goal of a nice lightweight variant is truly worthy, as ceharden suggested
it just seems a shame to be using a more developed technology that is capable of producing any desired shape and not trying to develop the idea a bit. as i understand it one of the biggest issues with such a horn is getting the round to square transition to work nicely, i'm sure by shaping down a block of foam or similar you could make a better job of that part than the mt122. james. |
