Hello,
I like the Sound of double 12" Speaker fpr the Top. I think about building some 2x12"+1,4" Tops. Now my question: I want to take some 1850 for the bass. Maybe about two per top. But I heard that the 1850 doesn't sound nice with some kind of tops. You think that's right? Anybody tested 1850 with 12" or 2x12" Tops? Is it a well choosen combination? Or what do you prefer? Thanks for your help Fabian |

It's important to get a top which goes low enough to crossover properly to the 1850s. Each owner has a different opinion of where is best to cross 1850s over, some think anything above 120Hz sounds horrible, personally I think 150Hz is fine. Play around with some music you know and see at what point you think the 1850 sounds strange, then make sure whichever top you design or build goes low enough, preferably a little lower than the crossover point.
If you choose a front loaded, reflex design, you will need to delay the tops to accomodate for the long horn lenght of the 1850s. This is easy with a digital LMS (ultradrive XTA, minidrive, etc) or even an analogue delay unit. Edited by biotec - 22 February 2011 at 10:28am |
