Hi all,

Im trying to find a simple design for a 12in sub to be part of a small compact system...

Have come across this design... http://www.lsv-achenbach.de/plaene/plan_sub12.htm

Any thoughts?

Which driver would work best?

Not after mega SPL, just something that gives a bit of warm low end.

Cheers guys

Jamie

The Ciare 12.00 SW is the one to go for.

As any 12" with big Xmax (11,5 mm one-way), it won't bring you a big SPLmax, but thanks to the power handling of 1000 Wrms it will give a relative lot of bass out of a very small box. It doesn't go really deep either. A lowcut at 40 Hz (or higher) is recommendable.

It's also available in a 4 ohm version with pretty much the same T/S-parameters and thus, you won't need a huge or expensive amplifier.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply. Is there a P Audio driver that would work well?

Cheers

Well, there is the TM-12, but it has only a 3" voicecoil instead of 4" and by this decreasing the powerhandling substantially (400 Wrms instead of 1000 Wrms). For a higher SPLmax you need a bigger voicecoil. SPLmax in this case will be lowered around 5-6 dB (simulated). On the benefit it would give more low end.

The Ciare would, with 1000-1500 Wrms on it, reach the SPLmax of a small PA, probably comparable with some 3" voicecoiled, 15" models, so enough for small parties in a relative small space as well.

The TM-12 just wouldn't reach that level.

Cheers

Hello mobiele eenheid,

x-damage on the TM-12 is about 25mm one way! This is more than the Ciare 12.00SW (I have seen and used both drivers) The Ciare is a very nice driver but when you see a TM-12 then you see something which is really build for a long throw. The two spiders are miles apart therefore giving the moving assembly an amazing robustness!

Remember that with a 11.5mm x-max the magnet already has to be 23mm thick only to assure that x-max. Would it allow for a 25mm x-damage then the magnet would have to be 34.5mm thick which it is not (well I did not measure it to be honest)

If the P-Audio TM-12 would take 1500W it would be the better choice, well it doesn't so that is one of the reasons we used the Ciare 12.00SW in our Punisher Horn...

Best regards,

Walt

Hello Contour,

I am familiar with the facts on both the Ciare as on the TM-12. Regarding to your Xmax/Xmech story I totally agree. However that doesn't change the fact that the Ciare will reach a higher SPLmax. As you seem to agree with.

Due to it's lack of power handling, the TM-12 just has become a driver for an other kind of application. In that/those specific application(s) the TM-12 will out rule the Ciare with ease.

Cheers
