haha, what a stupid name.

Anyways, has anyone qactually used these yet? More to the point, has anyone built and entire cabinet with the p-audio drivers and the 1.5" horn? did you just design a box around them?

I was wondering if anyone could explain the weird horn shape the 1.5" has. It svery narrow and small. Any reason for this?

I have 4 LAB horns and 4 HD15's. My current mid-yops struggle to keep up now. However, pat experience has always taught me that it takes 2 12" drivers to keep up with a 1.5" Compression driver. Do you think the porn horn would give enough increase to make things even iwth just 1 12"?

cheers guys

However, pat experience has always taught me that it takes 2 12" drivers to keep up with a 1.5" Compression driver

Most definately. Compression horns with HF horn flare can result in typical sensitivities of ~109db/1watt! Many 12"s simply cant match this (Closer to 97db/1watt),and youl need to either Pad the HF horn down- or active filter and match the levels that way.

As another thread on this forum shows-theres more to making speakers than plonking drivers onto a box and seeing what happens..it may make some noise though.

Cheers!

However, assuming the 12 goes up well in that horn, using a single horn per side will result in a more relaxed sounding HF. JBLesque horn drivers are famous for their shout between 1-4k and some people have gotten used to it (personally I hate harsh HF like nothing else and thus am going for other drivers). The dual option will give you more useful output than just double the amp power, as it restricts the vertical dispersion to a lower frequency and adds a max 6dB towards the lower end (probably closer o 3dB at x-over, but most of the energy is lower down anyways). The double also allows you to operate the horn lower / or with less excursion and thus distortion.

The HF horn is a conical horn(actually waveguide) if Rog is to be believed from days gone by (he also referred to the Selenium HL14-50 as a conical horn where the polar plots have a completely different take on this)

A conical horn has the advantage of having a very consistent dispersion and arrays very, very well. That horn is 8" in diameter about and even with a conical expansion should load the driver sufficiently. Apparently one has to pull down the driver a lot in that range, which would also help extending the HF well beyond 12k (of course one'd have to eq the horn). Modern drivers are very, very loud and don't need as much acoustical loading as in days gone by.

Martin

PS: When will we see some porn horn porn? Polar plots and more goodies. Surely the guys at Proaudio Parts must have measured them out and still have the plots somewhere? Perhaps Alex can post something along with the results of the shootout.
