Someone from here posted a link to dancetech, & I saw a section called "Let's Build Some Scoops".
 
So I thought I'd post it here, just in case it's missed.

Hmmmm yeah , the wadding should only be behind the driver in the chamber really.
 
The wadding/padding is used to deaden the sound and stop boomyness and colouration[resonance in the speaker chamber]. And also to reduce standing waves in the speaker chamber.
