Try a Boominator...
You can get the divers needed for about £125, that leaves you with £75 for the plywood, ta2020 amp and a 7ah 12v sla battery.
Look for the amps on ebay from china/hongkong, the ta2024 is cheaper but less power.
Im building one right now. Thumbs Up

Or a cutdown Boominator like Gavos suggests or a full blown Halfinator.

How much speaker can you tote around? (size/weight)
How long do you need it to run?

good drivers whatever comes up on ebay with high efficiency and possibly neodymium magnets (to save on weigt) and a good price. do not use cheap hifi or car audio drivers efficiency on them is not enough.
alternatively get some second hand pa boxes... will save on building and wood costs.

tool station or local electrician shop for 12v alarm system batteries...

or ebay and golf cart/mobility scooter batteries, or car garages and car batteries with some life in them
hifimediy for class d high efficiency amplifiers... stay out from cheap car audio amps they will drain any battery fast when used without a car
