Would I be asking be too much of two of these (or the 15" version) to keep up with my 2 xb loaded mini scoops?

Quite like the idea of 2x minis on their sides and 2 of these fanes in sealed cabs on top, crossed around 100hz for a compact system...

hmm, a large polypropylene capacitor will cost more than the driver! What's an acceptable inexpensive replacement?

Bipolar Electrolytic Capacitor, 330 µF, 63 V - Visaton | CPC UK (farnell.com)

or can you connect two polarised electrolytics back to back?

63V bi-polar capacitors are only good for Hi-Fi use.
Better have two 100-160V double value polar capacitors in anti-series.
Way easier to find than high(er) voltage bi-polar ones.

I just fail to see how adding a capacitor would improve bass response ?

thanks, yes these could see 130V peak if run from a large amplifier so better go for something bigger. there is no need to put diodes across each capacitors to protect against reverse voltage as some suggest, is there? each capacitor will protect the other in the pair.

here is link to AES paper - can read the introduction page for free:

couple of measurements taken from 2m in medium sized room. voltage not calibrated. blue on axis. brown about 20deg off axis. did a few other off axis measurements and the loss of hf happens fairly consistently. -3dB is about 80Hz. external box volume is 45L

sound is nice with a bit of eq - taking out a bit around 2kHz and 7kHz. bass is surprisingly detailed. listening on axis they are very coherent and you can hear detail in vocals and percussion that you wouldn't notice on other speakers. compared them to some martin em76 and some mordaunt hi fi speakers so far. can hear and measured some distortion from 200 to 800Hz. will try bracing and damping the baffle a bit better. it's a cheap speaker though so to be expected.

will get some better measurements next week. i did the off-axis by moving the mic rather than rotating the speaker - doh!

did some more measurements. 0,10,20,30,40,50deg off axis at 2m. speaker on front of stage pointing up at mic i.e. as it will actually be used.

it's quite well-behaved dispersion up to 40deg off axis.

will do some measurements in a large concreted outdoor space to get a better idea of bass response. will try measuring with and without stuffing and series cap - if I don't get too cold!
