Has anybody modelled or got a plan for a reflex sub with this layout... It looks a good sturdy style of reflex

You could try designing one using WinISD and some 3d modelling software or just a notepad and pen.
It is not too hard and would be for a specific driver.

All my 18" subs use that type of design, as does the D&B QSub and various Martin Audio subs eg S218.
The corner ports contribute a huge amount of stiffness to the cabinet. I really like the configuration. What you will find is that the port position will tend to cause the tuning to come out quite a bit lower than a simulation might suggest. You get a lot of effective port extension from the corner position.

im a big fan of this layout and have a very big pile of single 18" subs using a very similar layout. It is a commercial design so i cant share the plans, but would make the following comments
As ceharden states, tuning will be lower than sims suggest - so shorten or oversize your vents, around 10% is a good starting point Brace Brace Brace - in my opinion, one of the major reasons reflex boxes have a poor reputation for kick or impulse response is due to panel movement robbing the enclosure of coherent output from the front. The stiffer the box is, the less energy is wasted in the panels, and the better the enclosure will sound. Corner bracing is a good start, but the internals of mine use a further 12 individual braces to create n exceptionally rigid box. round off any port openings, this will help minimise any port noise. Due to the placement, corner ports are less forgiving of high air velocity.

how do you model the triangular ports in win isd? do you do them as two square ports then half them? Also does anyone have a data base file for winisd that has a lot of good common pa reflex drivers in it?

There is nothing special about triangle ports, they complicate the box design a bit. BassBox can simulate triangle ports .
For an 18" you can start with 160L box if you want compact solution , or ~200 for an more low end.I did some PD186 version 1 sims but never got time to build the cabs and listen. I can send you some data if you wish but theres no reason why you could not do it yourself. |
