I've read that the 8 ohm ciare driver when loaded in a punisher shows a 10 ohm's and that 2 wired in parallel create a 6ohm load. Is this correct? Also, if i wired two 4ohm ciares in parallel, what load would this create?
previously we ran 8, 8ohm, punishers off 2 prolines (2 punishers per channel.) It was seriously loud, but im not sure if we were giving them enough power. would like to know if we would be better off running 4ohm drivers with the amps we have many thanks

The single number nominal Impedance is derived from the impedance curve. The actual load varies depending on frequency.
Here is the impedance curve of the ciare 12.00 sw (blue trace): when installed in a cabinet, the driver impedance curve changes. The formula for parallel connection is: 1/R(total) = 1/R1 + 1/R2 two ten ohm loads in parallel: 1/R(total) = 1/10 + 1/10 = 2/10 =1/5 R(total) = 5/1 = 5 ohms Proline 3000 provides 1500 W @ 4 ohm per channel, that would be 750 W per driver. While the 12.00sw is rated at 1000W, the difference in actual sound level is only 1,25 dB. So it's probably not worth the hassle to get more amping. You could of course double the amount of amps and run one driver per channel which would improve damping factor and give the driver full power. But I'm not sure the small gain in loudness is worth the extra 70 kg to carry + 1000 € investment. Using 4 ohm drivers makes little sense, since the amplifiers have to work harder at 2 ohms. Would probably be less safe.... |
