Hi All,

Summer's coming and its made me all enthusiastic for sounds again... so I'm pushing to get my big rig finished and pumping for the summer...

I'm also planning on getting a van (partly for dragging the rig around but mainly for camping  / festis etc) (the size I want wont cope with my whole rig anyway, will still need help to get the whole lot out)...

Soo.. planning on putting a little mobile rig together in the van (a VW Transporter T4)... all running off car amps and a dirty great big caravan battery (or two)... for instant camp site partys...

Has to be fairly small (still need to be able to live in the van).. but want it LOUD (of course)... ideally it will all be built into / attached to the van (mids / highs mounted on the rear doors perhaps??)

I have a nice alpine headunit with 3 way cross over built in (also has delays end parametric EQ too)... so that will head up the system.. and luckely it has a AUX input... so that can accept a mixer  / laptop if needed...

The rear of the van will be a bed, so I have some useable space under the bed.. I was thinking maybe a horn or scoop in the space... but I was also thinking that I may be able to use the actual door apperture as part of the cab (somehow)... any thoughts?

Also... because I only have 3 way x over... the bass will need to cover sub + kick... maybe I should go for a simple vented box?

What I want is good / loud (relitively) sounds OUTSIDE the vehicle when the doors are open.. able to play to maybe 50 peeps or "dance-able" over a largish field.. and good stereo image too ideally.

Basically I'm looking for ideas... anyone seen anything cool?

I used to be into in car stuff in my youth and know how to hook up amps / bigger batts etc

well if you're able to and are lucky enough, you could get your aternator replaced or rewound with a smaller pully aswell to kick out some serious amps. for example, i have a 130amp idel / 200amp max modified alternator on my system and basicly just sitting at idel i can crank about 1.2k true power at 4ohm my self. my settup is *going* to be meant for sound quality so mine doesn't really get all to high in spl. but basicly, if you can get your self a high power alternator upgrade or if you're able to add a second alternator you would have TONS of options.

i think for your settup though, you might do just fine with a couple compact 15's in some reflex boxes. simular to Nexus's 55hz tuned 18 only you would be using a pair of 15's and said tune then to 50hz? even though it's 50hz tuned, you will get some NICE range out of that. mid/high wise, i would to a component system settup and stick to the car audio side. some of the component systems out there can REALLY scream without much power at all. you could do with upgrading you vehicle's main battery to say a Kinetik Audio HC1800 possibly and maybe a HC1400 near the amps.

the basic idea i'm thinkin about...
a pair of live audio 15's with higher sensetivity and tuned for around 50hz
car audio based component system

amp wise, JBL's PX and BPX lines are VERY VERY nice and are designed by crown. it would be wise to get a good PX600.2 or PX300.4 for mid/highs and jugding by the amount of bass power you're looking for, possibly a BPX1100.1 or BPX2200.1 *about 1,000watt at 4ohm for the BPX1100.1 and about 2,400watt at 4ohm for BPX2200.1. BPX2200.1 may be a better option so that you have lots of amp headroom*.

also, an upside to using the live audio drivers, you can find some nice Neo drivers so that you can save on how much weight you are adding to the vehicle and how much it will effect the overall mileage.

Cheers for the help man... think your right.. larger alternator would be a usefull addition... will be on the cards if the funds stretch...

Thinking a couple of big batts near the amps (friend runs a car audio place so I will source through him) would be a good move (I have seen him fit very large looking batts in the rear of his customers cars and he says he has run them 6 hours flat out  (running about three large looking amps) and still been able to start the car.. so they sound like a right thing)... no idea on model numbers etc.. your obviously clued up on all that.

When you say "live audio" drivers do you mean PA drivers or is that a brand?

I'm aiming for high sensitivity... to counter act the lack of watts...

Double 15"s sound good... and chepish if I get PA Drivers...

Interesting you said automotive mids / tops... do you think I will need loads of them (like 4 6" mids and 4 1" tops.????

Also... install ideas... what are your thoughts on actaul speaker placement / bass cab design / placement... do I want the sound coming out of the back of the van... or the side? (side would be cooler).. but having 2 15"s firing straight out the back doors also sounds cool...

Bed at the back with a twin 15" or you might even be able to fit a twin 18" underneath.  Think something like a D&B QSub, really compact.  For mid tops, either 10", 12" or even twin 8" drivers with a 1" compression driver and a passive crossover will make a lot of noise from a small box.  Very impressed by mine, especially efficiency.

System could also be taken out of the van and run on PA amps when power is available.

whe i say live audio, i mean actual pa drivers for sensetivity purposes. the use of larger 10 or 12" mids with comp drivers and whatnot seems a little over kill for small camp parties. mainly for the mid and highs, a couple pairs so yes, 4x 6 1/2" + tweets, best way to go is component systems.

you can have the mids from your doors like you normaly would and have the 15's in the back firing out. you could use 18's but at that point i would seign the cab so that you would almost have a planer hybrid horn going on. tilting the 18 upward or downward with it more firing onto the inner wall with the venting in the right fitted area. you can have a slim enclosure under the bed you mentioned so it doesn't take too much head room.

also, they guys you are refering too with thier batteries. yes it'll run for a long time with a bunch of batteries. but having THAT much added weight can really bug your fuel efficiency while driving thats why it would be best to have that alternator upgrade so you can just turn the engine on and let it idel while you are demanding a ton from your electrical. at most i would say a Kinetik Audio HC2400 for the main replacement if you can fit it and another 2 HC2400's near the amps. this will allow you ALOT of play time while the engine is turned off and it wont be TOO much added weight to the vehicle.
