Hi fellow scientists

I'm planning to build a new Dub Soundsystem and i'm not quite sure wether to go for the 1850 or the 186 Horn. what exactly are the diffeneces in Sound and how do they work in various settings (small indoor, outdoor)?

Sidequestion: in a 4 way system, is a stacking of 2-4 1850s/186s really suitable as SUB speakers or should i use them as kickers (90-150hz)?

thx for your help

I agree, they aren't a sub cab and they aren't a kick cab either. They are a general bass cab.
Better off with a group of high power 218 reflex box really.
If you was set on going for something horn loaded for bass then maybe you could build some WSX copies loaded with V18. They sing in a group of 4

i seem to agree on that. well but what is the 218 reflex box? is a reflex design really capable of big outdoor sessions?
WSX look crazy and seem to be the way better option! what V18 are you talking about? how is it better than the RCF 18LP300 driver?

As a sweeping generalisation, reflex can allow you to go lower in frequency for a given box size than horn loaded, but will be less efficient, so you're likely to need more boxes to get the same total volume. If you're willing to build/carry/power the right number of boxes then yes, sure they can do big outdoor events.

It has parameters that make it better suited to horn loading than the L18P300 and can handle more power and allow you to push it harder.

the 186 horn is not much of a kick cab!!! i cross out at about 120hz but i want to go lower like 100hz, some dual 15 or 12 reflex or a short bandpass horn will do the kick range alot better than the 186 horn will

You don't need the kick cabs with the 2x18's. Don't wast your money, build more 2x18

It all depends on music genre.

For a real Dub/Reggae Sound, the Low mid is almost as  important as the sub section.

This means 80-400hz section, must be pronounced and clear.

Most 2x18 reflex cabs are "foggy" above 150hz, and need specific drivers, with lighter cones, to achieve anything decent at this freq or higher.

Typical 2x15" reflex, handle this perfectly, though lacking efficiency. But often the SPL compromise, is worth the added detail.
