Hi all,
I'm a newbie to the forum, cue the sighs... so apologies if I am breaking forum rules etc. Essentially I am going to a festival in a couple of weeks time and have been tasked by the group to source a decent speaker that will work for the purpose. Essentially will need to get this all sorted next week so its either find someone on here that will hire or sell me a Soundboks / boominator / halfinator or similar... so buy one of the (I'm sure absolutely grand, but battery life is going to be shocking) Kam / ion Blockrocker type units ... or build my own halfinator (will be handier than boominator for travel) but I must say I am quite worried about messing it all up and then having nothing and having invested a good bit with no speaker to show for it... So far, I have worked out the following: 1. Got halfinator sketchup plans - still trying to work out how to print them out and still to find someone that can do the CNC routing. Also - my plan has space for 2 tweeters, rather than just one on each side - will removing one on the finished unit affect things negatively? 2. Parts I think I need: Sub horns and piezo tweeters: £78 http://www.bluearan.co.uk/index.php?id=JAMBOOMINATORKITE Grills and edges: £10 http://www.bluearan.co.uk/index.php?id=JAMHALFINATORKITF How long ya's reckon accusafe stuff will take to come? The wood and the glue and some silicone for the rear of the tweeters and sealing around the rear of the speakers? epoxy glue and non-corrosive silicone...right? Using the guide from: https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.accusafe.nl%2Fhow-tos%2Fhow-to-kistradio-kratradio-bouwen%2F I would be grateful for any help or advice that anyone may be able to have or alternately, if someone would like to sell me a similar system, I am all ears - so please get in touch - somehow ... (no private message feature on this forum?) Apologies again for any ignorance or if I have broken any forum rules by asking silly n00b questions.. Cheers, Niall |

I'm not familiar enough with the Halfinator plan or Accusafe's delivery times to help with that, but there is a huge amount of documentation and forum threads out there, just search on Google for your specific question (term it generally, ie "Halfinator construction steps", or "wiring up Halfinator electronics", etc) and most of them will bring up forum posts where it's been answered in some detail. Try going through Accusafe's order process and see what their delivery options are. If in doubt send them an e-mail.
If you do find yourself in a pinch though, the budget you mention (about 220 Euros) is more than enough to just buy a half-decent Class D board from eBay (about 10 to 30 Euros, UK postage is usually extra), a couple of 7ah SLA batteries (20 Euros), and one or two quality, high efficiency used PA speakers, 8", 10", 12" monitors ie (75-150 Euros), and a sack truck to carry it all on (30 Euros) which you could either take forwards as part of a more serious project later, or sell on after the festival. That's what I would do anyway. For example I searched "PA monitors" on eBay in the used section, in the first few results comes up: These are professional PA cabs, about 20kg weight for the pair. You'll get something approximating the performance of a Halfinator with these. It's one suggestion anyway - there are loads of users on the forum with odd bits like this for sale, and probably for less money, so if you can at least source your own battery and amp you'll have a lot more options. I think you missed the battery on your shopping list. If you do buy an amp board from eBay, be aware most of them won't have input sensitivity to match your phone or mp3 player's output (I imagine the ones for the Halfinator project do have that). You might be able to find one that specifies that it has that feature though. The best way to compensate for this, and anyway I would recommend it in any case for enhanced audio quality, is to buy one of the cheap USB powered PCM2704 soundcards and an OTG USB cable (or whatever the equivalent for an iPhone is). You can run the soundcard from you phone's charging port and it'll output audio at a higher gain level.
