Could it be the rack itself? If you Isolate the rack ears of the amps from the rack strip does it still happen?

I don't think so - I've tested driving an amp bolted into a different rack to the DCX, same problem. Of course all the amp chassis will be linked via their power lead earth connection even if they are isolated from the rack. Might try a few more tests to be absolutely sure.

Well it took a while to turn up, but at the price that's fair enough. The optoisolator did the trick, thankyou very much.
Somewhat weirdly when I first tried it there was still some noise. Added my butchered RS232 cable with the shield snipped at one end into the link and the noise went away. Took the butchered cable out again and hooked up with a standard cable again and still no noise... no idea how that worked, but so far so good.
