I'm getting ready to start my first build and thought I would consult you vets with past experience completing G Subs.
Building per plan with 3/4" Birch (probably Agathis for me) and RCF drivers... what kind of weight are you guys ending up with these cabinets? I'm assuming they will be stout, but management by 1 person rocked into a truck? Is the handle placement (2 on each end) proving most optimal for you? My current dual 18's are on the sides and only feature a single handle each side. I think I like the idea of the handles on the ends for moving horizontally, but am wondering if two are really necessary per side. How many of you guys used castors? I've never used them on cabinets and assumed they would be a constant source of rattling when in use. How do you guys deal with that. I normally use a dolly at gigs, but some of my venues involve a very lengthy trek through back hallways and elevators and can see having independent rolling on some cabinets being a help when I have extra helpers. My SUV is normally space limited when I'm tossing the big cabinets in there, so the extra wheels could be a perk. Feedback appreciated, |

Two handles on either end and castors, you’ll be able to man handle them no problem.
I’ve not had any issues with rattling castors on my double 18”s |

Thanks for the feedback. Was leaning towards a single handle centered, but I can probably get used to having two lifting options.

Hmm... wouldn't a corner type recessed caster accomplish the same thing?

Having lifted bins with just 2 center handles, I can absolutely say
they are sh1t. Very easy to get an injury. 2 (2 each end )handles provides leverage to maneuver the bin much easier. Just my 2penneth worth..... Edited by valve head777 - 15 February 2018 at 10:38pm |

Thanks for the feedback, sounds like 2 each side is the winner for me. Again, new to having handles on the ends at all ... my Yamaha's have them on the sides and generally are a pain. If they weren't such a light cabinet it would probably be even more frustrating.

agreed, we have only 1 centered handle on ours and they're apain to move, 2 men to move it (without wheels) 3 men to lift it (over scoops or in the van) We lift it at 2 when we have no other choice but it's a pain so I would go for 2 handles each side

Castors are amazing things, given the right load in you can stack a bunch of gear on a sub and wheel it in all at once. You won't have rattle issues if the cabs are built and braced well. 2-4 handles per end will be fine. 2 will do, 4 (with one pair rotated) gives you an extra lift option if you're feeling fancy.

If built with 18mm ply (the standard over here) the empty cab should weigh in about 45kg. That's without drivers, grille, finish and hardware, so finished box should be in the 75kg range. Obviously choice of drivers affects this, I've assumed 12kg each for those.

seriously, castors are nice but don't help when packing in a tight space Edited by JBK - 16 February 2018 at 1:37pm |

If you cutoff one edge scoop style you won't have a problem with packing smartypants
