HD 15

How good are these just using them as base bins Horns

This size is the only size I can fit in Vauxhall Opel Zafia with the rest of the gear.

So I can only make 2 of these cabinets.

Are the fane 15xb Col drivers any good or which drivers would be best to keep up with the rest of the system.

Please any advice on the drivers

Do these kick bins sound really harsh and hard?

Do they have a high output, is it possible to get blood out of a stone when there are only 2 cabinets or does depend on the drivers.

My set up so far is

8 12inch 100db 1 watt midrange in pairs of 2 in a total of 4 cabinets and then 4 high frequency horns to go on top.

They run on 2 amps with active crossover, which sounds good.

I have a 1200rms amp spare ready for the bass or 600+600 a channel.

Music played is big band sound, which would be in a large hall but not so loud.

Then a bit of disco music in a much smaller hall, which should not be a problem.

Thanks for any answers Philip Banyer

Hi Philip,

The HD15s will work well, but you won't get much below about 50hz from them if you are using only 2. If this is not a problem, the best driver to use for small amounts of HD15s is the P Audio BM15LF. Loophole uses 4 of these units, and is very happy with the output they give.

Hope this helps

I think that the rest of your system will outgun the output of the 2 HD15's although you don't say how much power you're running into the mids/tops and where you cross them over.

Thanks for the replies to you all.

Yes I think the bass will not keep up with the rest of the system.

But I can balance the settings so it works.

I have digital EQ and digital 31 band Xover

The speakers

4 horn highs are 70 watt rms each 106 db for 1 watt

8 12inch midds 200watt each 100 db for 1 watt

The bass will be 2 HD 15 not sure of the power till you all recommend the best driver to use the price is not a problem.

Amp wise stereo

Highs 100 a channel rms

Mid    300 a channel rms

Bass   600 a channel rms

Total power 2 channels 2kw

At the moment the highs are crossed about 3.5khz that seemed to sound the best.

Not sure what to x the HD15 at to the midds

I did ask about the Fane driver as it is rated at 600 watt for bass, would this be better than the other drivers recommended.

I must say today when I measured the vehicle I was disappointed with the little space I had.

I did have dreams of bigger cabinets but the wife has control of the size.

Thanks for any help from you all.

The HD15s to Mids should be crossed over at around 140hz. You wont be able to push the Mids and Horns to full, as the HD15s won't keep up, but if you set everything up properly, you will achieve good results.

How about running just one 2x12" and 1 horn a side and put 2 HD15's under each.  That'll be nicely balanced but you could do with running them a bit harder.  If each 2x12" cab is 4ohms (total 400w) then run your 600w a side amp into those and get an amp to give 1000w-1200w a side to run the HD15's.  Space mightbe tight but i managed to get 4HD15's, 2 12" monitors (like EV 300's) stands, amps into the back of an Escort estate.  Still had space for the girlfriend in the front and i didn't have to make her sit on anything

When you say 'big band sound' are you talking rock or Glen Miller swing?

Why go with a box that's designed for an entirely different purpose?

Much as I love HD15's, I am certain you would be far better off just building a pair of reflex boxes and driving them with a decent amp.

You can stick a PD186 in a reflex box about the same size as an HD15 and it will play down to a -3db point of about 37hz.  You're not going to get a single HD15 to get anywhere near that.

Even better, you can actually design the box so it exactly fits into your car...

Also gets you away from having to mess around with time aligning all the drivers, as if you use HD15's you'll have to delay your mids and tops...
