really like the sound of my pd 156 reflex boxes ran opff a crown ma2400 as they sound really warm. looking for a bit more output would the 156 give the same tone in a hd15 just with longer throw or will it sound clean? thanks

HDs sound completely different to reflex cabs in my opinion, as do most horns, they tend to 'colour' the sound, some like this sound and others don't (I do). You'll probably find that the 156s in HDs won't play as low as the reflex bins but the HDs will have better effeciency, longer throw and kick a lot harder.

There is no such thing as long or short throw cabs as such.
As kick bins over a reflex HD15's are tried and tested and work really well. |

'throw' has some meaning but is often mistaken.
As horn loaded cabinets tend to have more efficiency, they are louder, and louder goes further. Throw is how well the cabinets can push their acoustic energy out into a given area. This is more down to how the cabinets are deployed than their design. Getting the bass cabinets within certain wavelengths create different coupling and cancellations. A long row across a stage will create a powerally, effectively firing all forward (and backwards), certain distance appart in two stacks can cancel out given frequencys, ect ect..... Of course, some bass cabs do start to become directional in large piles. Cardioid config is also meant to help 'throw' in some cases so i once read? |
