I'm looking for a three in, two (or three) out HDMI matrix switch thingamajig... that doesn't cost stupid money. I've tried one of the Amazon twenty quid specials which worked, but not very well. The main problem being it flickers ALL the screens connected to it when you change any of the inputs or outputs, and, even messes with the PC that's connected to it, meaning you have to restart the PC 99% of the time. I've also seen some that retail for several hundred quid... which is out of the budget. I'd say the budget is gonna top out around the £100 mark, so... anyone got any ideas? Or am I not gonna find anything without going to several hundred?

Without going to a switcher most units will renegotiate the EDIDs when you switch, blacking out and flickering displays is the result of that. What is the rest of the architecture and what are you trying to achieve?

My go to for this thing was always Kramer, but I've used Wyrestorm products with good results too. The EDID issue mentioned is an important one. The only reliable way is to either use exactly the same displays connected to it, or to use a product with a programmable EDID memory. You will also have less issues if the connected sources are all outputting the same resolution and frame rate. A last point is heat. These products do get hot, so it's important that they are not enclosed, and preferably are fan cooled if mounted in a crowded rack. If safe and practical, I tend to do away with rack side panels.

Thanks for the info, especially James, I'd never thought about EDID but it explains a lot. The unit is going into a social club, with video from a PC (for advertising etc), a Freeview box (for TV) and another input for any guest speaker/entertainer who wants to plug in. The PC is also used for the DJ and music playback, so switching during a night is needed without re-starting. Think I'm gonna do some reading on EDID and explain the problems and see if I can get an increase on the budget.

If you don’t need the matrix outputs and just want a basic switcher / scaler there are a lot of older bits of pro kit about at silly cheap money at the moment. Maybe a switcher and a distribution amplifier could fill the need.
If it needs to be a matrix switcher then look at https://proav.roland.com/global/products/xs-1hd/

Thanks for the info James, (that Roland unit would be ideal if it was a lot cheaper!), but I've been looking at the 2nd hand stuff, and as you say there's a lot out there and cheap too... just waiting on the club letting me know budget.
