Do you have alternate  pc?

Connect them to that, confirm if data still present and in order.

Erm, did machine crash or was rebooted, with them attached, without being shutdown first ?

If you're lucky, maybe Partition tables are bit garbled, but data still readable from Linux.

Is your "protection" suitable, and up to date ?

Where the external drives formatted as NTFS or FAT32 ?

If you have secondary pc, possibly an idea to retrieve hard disk from external case, open up pc, and connect secondary data cable/power cables directly to drive, to confirm if drive or external drive case malfunction.

How old are the drives?

Could be some bad sectors.

unplug em... wrap them up tight in a bin linner so theres more or less no air, with the psu...a nd chuck them in the freezer for 30mins...

get them back out plug them in and see what happens.

no its not a nuts idea, iv done it a number of time and has worked more often then not. externals dont sleep and driving them at 100% for a few hours all by them sevles and then buggering off out isnt a nice way to treat you hdd's...

give it a try, it wont damage them... dispite the amount of abuse im about to get.

Download an iso image of the GParted Disk Utilities live Boot CD and make a CD of it.

Boot your PC directly from the GParted CD (not into Windoze) and with the external Hard disks connected.

Follow carefully the on-screen instructions to find your partitions on the external drives.

There are a number of different utilities within this CD to either test your Hard Drives, recover lost partitions or files within corrupted partitions.
This Software is quite 'powerful' so be careful!

If the USB links fail, then try removing the Hard Disks from the external boxes and connect them directly into your PC.
You can disconnect your Windoze Hard Drive when you do this as it is completely unused for the GParted Software to work on your other drives.

Good luck!

Mik
