Would the efficiency make up for the low x-max and power handling??

I wouldn't get too hung up over the xmax, as every manufacturer measures it differently.

As long as the voice coil height (hvc) is about 5mm longer than the magnetic gap length (hag) you should be ok.

If it is much more than 8mm longer than chances are other parameters will mean the driver is unsuitable. Especially the efficiency will usually be too low.

Besides that... Xmax gets pretty academic when a speaker works from 200Hz and up. Xmax of 1-1,5mm is plenty.

My list ( for what it's worth Wink ) :
1) Beyma 122Nd
absolute top in efficiency and sound, lightweight is nice too
2) B&C 12PE32 and Beyma 12MI100
can't hear a difference between those two
4) RCF L12P110K
just a tad less soundwise, but the weight is a killer
