Does anyone have any experience with homemade monitors compared to professional offerings?
Drop here!

I'm looking at making some monitors with either  a B&C 12CXN76 or BMS 12CN860 for use as FOH as well.

How would these compare to professional offerings such as the Martin LE100 or LE200? Would my time be better spent buying new?

I've done some 12" & 1" monitor cabs.

Not had any complaints for engineers or artists.

I see no reason why a well designed enclosure that is setup well can't stand up agents commercial offerings.

Admittedly, mine have got through a few iterations.

Those look very well made, why did you go for a 12+1 as opposed to a coaxial driver?

cheers.

I went with the horn apposed to a coax as I use them for FOH and monitors.
I've always preferred a horn on a FOH cab as HF is more predictable, thats only my opinion.

side point, when used as monitors the HF phase needs inverting.
Can only imagine its something to do with reflexions from the floor.

Yes - I have a carpenter friend who made cabs for a couple of companies here. He decided to make a small 12" + 1" and asked me to help on the xover.

We did loads of tests, etc. (SMAART) and the cab turned out really good. He used Selenium for both drivers, while I went for P-Audio SN12B and the Selenium 1" (DT150). I also added a switch in order to bi-amp the cabinet, which I prefer, really.  Smile

I have 6, another friend 8 and a few others sold to some groups for rehearsal rooms, etc. Never had anyone complain.

Here are some coaxial monitor plans

B&C 12" coax

B&C 15" coax

Eighteen Sound 12" coax

From my personal experience, I would strongly recommend the B&C 12CXN76. I've used and heard it countless times. It is a very, very good coaxial driver used by many of the highest-level pro manufacterers worldwide.
