Ive got family who live in the sticks and have to put up with 60db + attenuation. i did a bit of investigating, and asked a guy on the networks team at my work, and he hinted that if you have a standard BT master socket in your home, and unused telephone extension points, every single one of those points is adding further interferance to the line, and should be isolated..

i admit the words 'hacking the bell wire off' may have been a little bit misleading Sleepy

if you want to know more, 2 mins of googling found me this link which is pretty much exactly what i did, just isolates the bell wire from any extension sockets in the house, and should cut out alot of interferance.. Family and friends who ive done this for have reported an average increase from 1.5mb/s to approx 2.5 - 3mb/s just simply by removing that household wiring interferance.. its aparently rife in older properties where years of splitting and putting new sockets in etc have caused alot of interferance...

of course, general house cleaning tips are to go round and tidy up all your telephone wiring, to remove any possible interferance.. not noticable in city locations, but 7 miles down the road.. i was plesently surprised :)

People need to stop being cheap.
Last month my evening download speed dropped loads.
BT Speedtester (the proper one) showed 1/2mb equivelant. Day time I had 7 ish.
A quick call, some investigation, some tests, checked another user on Zen in the area, conclusion:
Congested VP at my exchange.
They promptly aske BT to move me to a better one.
Four days later, full speed.
Quality, British, Service.
You want phone and BB for 20 quid then you'll get poo service at some point.

unfortunately, no matter how much you pay, in some cases, they cant put more speed down the line than it can handle.. in which case.. BT local loopback fiber backbone installed into the exchange, then u just sell it to all your neighbors and make money :D

i used to use post office ADSL, dirt cheap, never a problem,  plus i didnt mind sitting on hold to them, because if u have the post office home phone, calls to their service centres are free :D got a steady 7 meg on a paid for 10meg line which i couldnt complain at.

best ISP ive ever had down south are UK online.. expensive, but their speeds rocked.. 24/7 full speed :D

Just somehow think this report in the Register is appropriate in this thread on Internet speed:
Pidgeon Upload

the old fashioned methods certainly have their advantages!
