Hi all,

After selling off my scoop system last year and getting a little active system (2x Yamaha DXR12mk2 2x DXS15mk2) for dry hires, I had a thought about expanding the system in the coming years. Really happy with the sound from the set up and fits in my boot etc, but I have been thinking about 4x dxr12 and 4xdxs15 with 4x Hogs underneath...

Could treat the yammies as big full range tops, hpf at 80ish and run Hogs underneath, I get the sense that the punchy but obviously not low dxs15 would work well as mid bass and the hogs would add some 'soundsystem' flavour that I so miss and I have never owned Hogs but lots of other types of scoop. But without incurring huge extra investment and a keeping a versatile active system.

I did end up running a pair(!) of DXR12s over 2x218 reflex and 4 larry dub scoops at a party in Lakota (when the other tops brought by a friend failed) and they kept up (was a fairly small room for the size of rig) but had lots of compliments and RC1 and Sinai were in the other rooms so quite heavyweight neighbours.

So my question is, is running active tops/mids in a larger setup just impractical/risky? Has anyone had experience of doing a similar thing?

Cheers

one of the best bits of sound system stuff is that there are no rules

if that's what you've got, go for it. the process of making it work, learning shit, and tweaking is going to be fun

have run active tops with passive subs on a small setup for many years, no problems. but equally no groundbreaking sonic experiences lol

No it seems really good idea to me. You might get easy rental from the Yamahas. On their own as well.
