Basically I reinstalled vista on my laptop today as i was having loads of problems, when it came to the install I formatted the HDD and set up a 15gb partition for the OS, 15gb for programs and then had (or should have) 90gb left over.

I started my laptop for the first time i opened windows explorer and clicked my computer to find three partitions, system (c), Programs (d), and WINRE (f), I googled WINRE and found it to be a recovery image.

I've tried formatting it but to no avail, WHERE HAS MY 90GB GONE?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

you need to assign the remaining 90 Gb to a new partition

Is the 90gb partition formatted?

use  "Disk Management" to see whats going on.

E.g right click on "My Computer"->Manage->Disk Management

EDIT:Maybe you shouldn't be messing with partitions mate, if you dont understand unformatted partitions and Windows Explorer.

OK.. just warning you, it is possible to have a very bad day when messing with partitions and formatting. Wink

But long gone are the days of DOS 5.0 and fdisk, so it's not as easy as it was to shoot off your foot, and half a leg... Angry

The restore image partition should be hidden from Explorer, it has a flag set. You've only made 2x15GB partitions, the 90GB is unpartitioned space waiting to be assigned to a partition.

Install Partition Magic, or boot a Linux live disc with GParted on it and assign that 90GB to a partition of its own.

Doesn't need to do all that, he can use Windows Disk Management to repartition, format or change the partition attributes.

However, I do have PM8 installed and it's a gem.

I do miss the old days though, using Norton Disk Doctor, and the omnipotent Disk Sector Editor.Embarrassed

thanks for the advice guys, i've had no luck with partition magic so I'm just going to leave it for the time being.

I'm going to get a 500gb HDD and install that when windows 7 comes out.
