Got some JBL 4530 for real low price, but im doubting if they are genuine or good copies.
They are quite battered, only weird thing to me is that they are made out of chipboard, think its 2 layers of 18mm. there is some plywood in the cabinet itself. Wil post some pics up later. So were they made out of chipboard back in the days? 60-70s

I can confirm, have a pair of genuine 4520 from the 1960ies with paperwork and serial numbers. Made from strong particle board.

I’ve seen chipboard cabs before in a few belgian smaller clubs aka local bars turned disco in the mid nineties. Mostly with a “real” plywood front, and build into standing tables at the front of the dancefloor. Notable different from the originals with the 10cm added below the scoop mouth or from the stage accompany copys with the added bracing around the speaker. No idea of a company or such.

Could these be real or fake?
Had different opinions on them.

I don't recall JBL making commercial cabinets made out of wood in that era. They always used very dense Chipboard. It is the main reason why many of them fell apart due to the rigors of the road. You can always pose the question on the Lansing Heritage Board. However, the sticker, the hole to house the Tweeter in addition to the Fiberglass, would lead me to believe it is original. Best Regards, |

Real. Ours had a similar look, and they came with certified paperwork.
It is however likely that the enclosures have been subcontracted to be built locally, since it would make no sense economically to build that kind of thing in the US and then ship it to another continent. |
