hi
i saw the Function One Res 4 and its really an amazing box! Im interested in building some new tops and im interested in an 12" horn / Kick bass filler like the Res 4! On the website of Function one it says:
How is it possible, what kind of a design, to play up to 445 Hz? Anyone an idea or any similar designs? (Of course no one got the Res 4 plans and im not asking for them!!!) thanks! Jan |

Again:
Of course no one got the Res 4 plans and im not asking for them!!! I want new tops, and i want to use them single for small events too but i dont want any reflex boxes. Im looking for something like Xtro but a little bit smaller, not 2x15", only 1x12" for a little (kick)bass support but it has to play high enough to get a 8" or 10" for the mids! So, whats about a HD12? Anyone build something like that? Thanks for your help! |

Janovic_x,
he's not having a go at you for referencing F1. It's just that when you get into this design process a bit more you'll realise that what you're asking is very difficult to answer. In the land of horns, it's one of the most challenging pass bands to get right. And also this question comes up a lot so boots is just telling it how it is, here we go again. Welcome to the party mate! |

It is possible to go that high because they use a custom made driver that you can not buy anywhere.
Same with the mid driver that has that axe shaped phase plug mounted directly to the driver.

Also i dont consider the 12 inch par of res4 as a "kick". It starts at like 120Hz and up.

It shouldn't be too difficult to make a similar low mid horn. The horn will need to be around 85cm long, thus needing a fold. A suitable driver will have a high resonance, low Qts, therefore will be a quite light cone with smallish coil and low power handling. You don't want a high power, high xmax, large voicecoil driver.

Why when you can have the same in a strait horn of about 50cm with a high power big xmax driver?

A 50cm horn will only load to around 175hz. It is of course possible to get more low end out with a brute force approach, but this is different to the f1 design which Janovic likes.

Depends on the driver used. High xmax driver with bigger back chamber will go much lower.

Thanks for your replies!
I think the mkh230 looks like something i look for, but its a little bit too big (depth), but perhaps.... lets see ;) @MarjanM: What is a "high" XMas Driver for a 50cm Horn? I mean, what is "high" xmas for a mid driver? For example, the MT130 is a "40cm Horn" and goes down to 120 Hz with the PD121 (2,7mm XMas)! |
