What do you need it to do?..

Most electronics supply places ( Farnell etc. ) have several types of microprocessor development kits available, often containing a 2*16 char LCD, some buttons and the option to connect to a PC via an RS232 port..

You will need to do a bit of programming, but stuff like the Pic 16F84 microcontroller is relatively easy to work with and pretty cheap aswell..

I too recommend the pic16f84, cheap as chips to get started with (free programming circuits on the web to connect to your pc, free compilers) etc.

What precisely do you want to do?

For ease of use, and ease to program I'd go down the PICAxe route.
