Not OSX though.

This post was written on Solaris 10 running on an x86 box. I also have a 64bit dual core PC with RAID 1+0 that I use for DTP and other Windows software that I have. I do have a soft spot for Solaris though.

Because VGA is a horrible, outdated connection? What's wrong with DVI?

I have a super computer with 8 nodes, each with a dual-core 2.2GHz
AMD OpteronTM processor and 8GB RAM which I access from home using linux in a separate window on XP to simulate the movement of atoms inside a tiny bit of silicon.

and it's really boring

4300+ core2duos are only ~£30 second hand and alot will do 3ghz+ on stock voltage an cooling.
A mac can't touch that for value

But Macs aren't exactly targeted at the 'buy second hand components, build it yourself' market are they?

I use a mac as my main machine because I have done so since ever (well, it was Nextstep for a very short amount of time as well, haha). The choice then was really whatever the free computer I got had on. I suspect that's the same for most people with windows. When I did my short course on computer science (totally outdated very shortly) there were some colleagues present who still knew how to use these bad boys: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&safe=off&um=1&sa=1&q=porta+punch+ibm&btnG=Search+Images&aq=f&oq= (that's what you get for going on an IBM sponsored course).

I am a tad annoyed by Apple 'selling out' as said by Mr 'nickyburnell', but I haven't kept up to date with nowadays' instruments of math destruction (oh, the gags)...awfully far behind.
Away on extended leave.

Was hoping for one the E6xxx series, with 2-4mb Cache.

And of course, the virtualisation functionality. Embarrassed

My mem speed is only PC-6400 (DDR2-800), so no point getting the 1333 Mhz brigade (I dont think).

I love my stability, so wont be overclocking.

Agree, it's so boring. I, Like Lev still have a Pentium D daul coreon the main PC, 3.4 one, needs to be core duo, if only for the electricity bill but I just cannot be bothered. It works so sod it. I havn't even loaded my Windows Seven release candidate yet, and it's my living! Must motivate. Spent most of today trying to figure out a deceased mans network in a very large dentist, zzzzzzz
It's everything, not everythink!

With Hardware prices the way they are, I just dont see the point now.

I dont have time to tune every little Bios param to get the system stable. If I need more speed, I'll double memory, get faster/more hard disk or faster cpu with lots of cache.

Bought a e5300 chip the other day, 2.6GHz stock, now running at 3.6GHz, passed 12hr Linpack stress test, so perfectly stable, pretty fast too!

Got a large heatsink tho, so I can have slow running fans, nothing worse than a noisy computer!

I'm English, and as such I crave disappointment. I actively seek it out.
