I'm on the hunt for a Martin Audio M1 System Controller.
I have just been handed a minty pair of Martin ICT300s by an acquaintance, and as I've never owned a pair of these before, I want to have a play with them. I'm not normally a Martin user, but I would like to see what they are like with the M1 controller, so if anyone has one knocking around, please let me know. Thanks. Hi deja-ibiza, I think I have one of these in the garage. Let me check it's there and that it powers up this evening.

Thanks Olly, I didn't expect any (helpful) replies so soon. Let me know if you find it!

IIRC correctly, it doesn't actually do a great deal and I certainly managed to make the ones I had sound quite a bit better using a different LMS. I have the Martin spreadsheet that I can email you if you PM me your email address.

Hi Jimi, What I remembered as a Martin M1 was actually an M3 sorry. I think I used to have an M1 but I moved it on with some ICT boxes I had. Jason is correct though - I could never see that it did anything very clever - it just put in about 15db at 6db/octave from about 8k up or something because the inductive coupling HF units rolled off quite badly at HF. The only extra thing on it was a switchable subwoofer Xover output at 120Hz. I substituted a Berry DCX with a parametric HF boost for an M1 because it had some limiters and I thought it sounded better. I've never been a massive fan of the ICTs but that could well be because all the ones I've had cause to deal with have been half knackered. They have an interesting design fault - if they get ragged for a long period the HF element doesn't blow (it has no voice coil) but the magnet gets hot enough to melt the plastic phase plug mounting which then falls off and shatters the diaphragm!

Ah, no worries Olly, thanks for looking.
I had guessed that the controller would pretty much be a basic EQ unit, and a simple solution to hearing them as they were intended. As it is, I've tried them flat, and now I've also tried them with an XTA 448 in the chain, with a shelf from about 10k upwards. When flat they are not too bad - I swept them and I could hear them up to about 16K. They don't have masses of sparkle, they are a bit like my RES1s - smooth, but not bright. With a boost from 10k upwards they are much brighter and crisper. (I normally put a 6db shelf on my RES1s from 13K upwards) I would still like to get hold of a controller though - with a controller I'm guessing they would make a reasonable small-scale DJ monitor set-up. So if anyone has one, please let me know.... Thanks. |

The only eq recommended by Martin is a 1.4Q boost of 6 dB at 66Hz so there you go...
