I've still got the 2 double 1" horn cabs but sold the horns a while back. Also got the 3  x 9" horns. I believe a couple of the ATC 9" drivers are still working.

That's two of my bucket systems I've missed there was two stacks of this A.S.S. Q system on ebay that sold for about 400 quid that I missed too Cry

This thread is wonderful, makes me feel all nostalgic for them times and I weren't even born! We need to find a way to capture more stories like this. You could almost be forgiven for thinking there just a few people in the scene as everyone seems to have known and worked with eachother at different cmpanies. And I love that companies were building boxes for eachother. That sorta thing doesn't happen anymore.

Back in the 70's and 80's it was a very small specialist market, more like a "cottage industry". So a small core of people was responsible for a lot of its early development.

There were a few specialised woodworking companies that acquired experience and expertise in building speaker boxes (the builders on here will know that a learning curve is involved) and everyone used them.

ASS and Mega were probably the major suppliers in the 70's.  ASS started when Tony Rossell took over Heathpoint Acoustics who had done some of Dave Martin's first production runs.

In the 70's there were very few hire companies. Major bands would usually have their own PA systems big enough to do the venues on the University and Town Hall circuit. This made sense because a sudden sales and royalty windfall from a hit record would be better used for investment in their business than distributed as income and heavily taxed at the end of the year. Some of these later formed the basis of well-known hire companies, such as Brit Row and ML Execs.

Typically a system would be ordered when a band had "made it", or after a hire company had landed a large tour and needed more boxes. Therefore cabinets were made in batches and consequently the work was very sporadic and unpredictable. So the woodworkers developed their own lines of standard empty box products to even out the workload. Obviously these had to be different from their customers' proprietary designs.
This eventually led to their bringing out complete systems but this could be a bit awkward as they might end up competing against their major customers for whom they were making boxes.

It also worked the other way around, for example SSE started out as a hire company in Nottingham and set up their own woodworking shop originally to make their own hire stock. This led to their building boxes for Turbosound (in the early days), Eastmill, and probably others.

Some manufacturers, mainly in the MI market where there was a more steady flow of production, had their own woodworking shops. Ohm Amplification in Knutsford offered their spare capacity to other manufacturers, for example they were making  a lot of CX cabinets for Martin on their CNC machine in the late 1980's.

A few smaller cabinet builders flourished for a while, for example Airstream in Leicester and Pan Precision in mid-Wales.

Hello!

Very interesting thread, learning alot here! I happen to come across some Mega cabinets recently, i bought 2 stacks like the one pictured for 250€.
The mids were not from Mega but they have a plate that say JOA or AOJ, something like that, quite hard to read it.

The horns had some RCF480's in them, and the mids were JBL 120e, And the WBins had some Altec Lansing 3156 drivers.

Balder.

Altec 3156? How old are they - guessing at least 20-30 years? Best suited to reflex cabs as IIRC they have a cloth surround suspension and TS params say they're not really suitable for subs but 500w power handling and high efficiency. Could the label on the mids be TOA - they did have some cabs made in the UK (Europe?) way back when but it could be they are simply TOA drivers in some home-brew cabs?
