Hello, me & a mate are considering building a small 'scale model' of 3 way soundsystem for the living room..part novelty.. but of course we'd like it to sound decent!
We would like some classic design e.g. scoops for the bass. I was wondering if anyone had any dimensions / plans for a 'mini sound' ..or ..would a scoop sound good if its dimensions were reduced to 1/3 of the usual size? or would a different design be (much) more effective?
Has anyone tried anything similar by any chance?
If anyone could give some advice on how to go on with this project, it would be appreciated!
Thanks

haha - im doing exactly this for some friends at their house. i decided i would build them a staiper micro 15, and an eminence 10" mid, and a 1" top on a short horn, all for really cheap.

no. physics means the scale model thing doesn't work. if for example a scoop that can play down to 40Hz was scaled down 1/3 of original size, it may then be able to go down to 120Hz - you can probably see the issue here. you could achieve the effect you want by using a large reflex chamber instead of a horn and making the port look like a scoop. alternatively there are a number of rear loaded horn designs for home hifi that might give the right aesthetic. |

interesting I'm working on the same issue for my home. I already have a 10" ciare cw254, and striclty external dimension, I'm working on some tapped horn layout.

I did something simular but it was all just guess work and did the dread thing of scaling down a full sized plan for the scoops. They dont sound too bad at all tho for some front room fun.

Exactly. Why not just have 18" Mini scoop, and 2x12"+1" reflex cab on top running 80hz upwards ? Would sound great close up, or in the kitchen/upstairs.. No living room would need more. ![]() |

If I was building a mini soundsystem I'd probably be thinking about the double folded tapped horns this guy builds for bass:

i agree with this man.
an 8" or 10" scoop would just be awesome ![]() edit: surely someone must be able to make / design one? i know that it wont be anywhere near as loud as its full size relatives - but for home use, hitting 110db and going low would be plenty ![]() ..and it would look pretty awesome

They look good but spotted a glaring error:
The guy didn't remove or short out his huge TH enclosures when testing the smaller ones, so in effect he was listening to 4 cabs, not 2! |
