Scenario 1, cone destroyed due to excessive low frequency, unloading the cab.
Scenario 2, driver cooking for long period, destroyed voice coil due to long term clipping or too high long term power.

How could you tell when buying s/h chassis as cheap option for recone?

Which one to avoid?

Cut the cone out and pick the one that has a clean voice coil gap.

So over heating of the motor assembly will degrade the magnetic flux meaning loss of effiency? Bit of a Russian roulette game....

No, the bigger issue is that a burnt out voice coil can sometimes get stuck in the gap and be a complete pain in the arse to remove, plus potentially leaving lots of sh1t behind.  A cone which has just been ripped due to excessive low frequencies or being fitted in the wrong cab is unlikely to have damaged the chassis.

There's a 3rd. Dropped and shifted magnet. Might initially seem like overexcursion damage but it's game, set and match.
Don't test the champignon sound

I have successfully recentred and glued xb magnet's in the past. However, it's normally heat that softens the glue up.....
