Good evening gents,
Ince spring has arrived somewhat early at our latitudes, I decided to celebrate by pulling some used bits of plywood from the local vocational schools dumpster. They seem to have cleared out this week, the container was brimming. Mostly low grade scraps, but i scored two big sheets of 12mm ply (albeit with some holes in them) and threee smaller pieces.

They didnt fit into my lockup, have to saw them up tomorrow.

Two boards came with fancy art work, portraying the cultural diversity of the institution........

Stay tuned, i have a bonkers idea that needs just about this much wood to prototype.....

PS: Wifey is going to kill me because of this one

PPS: So what do you do when you have just found two big sheets of ply that dont fit into your shitty little car? You park the car, lock it, take a ratchet strap and carry the wood home!

I know, I should get a life...

...a man with ambition!!!!

You only get out of it the effort you put in... walk it home brother!

I just hope your wife is as understanding as my GF.  The only woman I have ever met that said she would legit sell a kidney to buy me tickets to Cannes to watch the new star wars movie with the stars... I'm marrying this one!!

If it sounds like a gorilla is trying to escape, turn it down.

Thank you lads! I will mull over the concept a bit before I start building.....

Meanwhile i had to cut the big sheets in half just to get them inside my lockup, they didnt fit through the door

Had a proper muscle ache rhe next day. Wife was wondering why it took so long to take out the trash

I have a single fane 12-250tc laying around, and have been thinking about doing a scoop or mltl/tqwt type design...... Anyone up for some brainstorming and simming? I'd like to brush up my respective skills a bit. Since the wood is basically free, i'd like to be a bit experimenttal and adventurous. Doesnt hurt if the cab ends up on a bonfire eventually......

I have to assess what i exactly have panel wise, that will be the main design constraint. I have four big pieces ~1sqm, but with some holes. Another three smaller square pieces without any holes.

If you want bass out of that old-school type of driver, a Jensen Imperial type design will probably be best - so, *very* big rear chamber, comparatively small horn throat, medium length of horn with large mouth. And brace very well. Although the original patent specified quite thin wood IIRC so may have been employing panel resonances to enhance the final output.
I'm not sure how the Imperial sims in Hornresp but, I've heard them in real life with a wide variety of drivers and they are pretty magic. Deep bass even from a 6" driver (in a suitable baffle adapter).

it's a full range driver, so the design needs to be such that the front of the cone can radiate sound unobstructed.

I will need some time to improve my understanding in regards to cabinet simulation first. The software tools are readily available, no need to take guesses anymore. I haven't made any progress so far due to work and family life.....

You could build one of those crazy designs where the front of the driver is inside the horn mouth then the throat threads through the top of the horn and loops round into it. Nice easy build and the wife will love it.

sorry gents, no real news yet. Decided instead to do some improvements on my previous (still not quite finished) project. But I have made some nominal progress by joining Martin J. Kings Yahoo Group and successfully buying access to his library of worksheets. But that is about as far as I got until now, it will take a lot more time to familiarize myself with the material and produce some first simulated results. I have started another thread on this topic at diyaudio.com for this purpose.
