How about a laser pen and photo diode for a makeshift laser motion detector.

PIR sensors are far cheaper andmore forgiving in terms of setup.  I picked up 5 for 8€ on amazon

I wouldn't say so.. Pen £2, diode 10p, 5v adapter carboot £1. Arduino optocoupler £2.

Laser is a more accurate trigger for doors.

so, 5 quid for one setup, which will be fiddly when it comes to aligning the laser, vs less than 2 and all one has to do is aim it down

Yes more work but you could do some cool stuff with lasers sensors, like activate something when a hand it placed through a hole for example. Pir you kinda just hope that it triggers when you want it to. Never tried a £2 pir seems a bit cheap.

Well its up and running... audio quality is good for such a small device. The pir needs a decent voltage to operate properly and a few idiosyncrasies on loop length pir release timing & retrigger to dial in and then fit it all in a discrete box but so far so good..

Looks good, should be not too much trouble to modify the code to get what you want out of the PIR with regards to sensitivity.
