Hi All,

So.. I have 4 stacks of DB Technologies Fortyline. It has been bloody good for the money, I cannot really fault it apart from the plastic handels, it is hired most weekends and always sounds good. Used for House, Techno, Jungle hires up to 150 odd people, sometimes I add extra matching subs if I'm worried the subs will be hard pushed on two stacks.

Sadly, I have had three amp failures in the last three years and am starting to worry about reliability a bit as it ages. These are the RCF made amp units and drivers in these boxes.

I like the six box system, I feel it sounds better than more modern high power little boxes on poles/towers.

The obvious choice is the Linear 5 Big venue pack, a bit more bass responce and HKs reliabaility, sound quality and brand name. I havent heard it yet saying that! Any feedback?

Is there any other suggestions? - we talking £4-5.5k second hand type money here so no L'accoustics ect.

Any feedback appriciated.

If you like the performance and it does the job, why not spend less money on an overhaul?

Pull out the amps and hand them over to a tech shop. They should be able to find any issues and give all amps a new lease of life.
That is what I would do. It's a nice little system that should serve many more years.

Or you could pull the amps out, replace them with wood plates and neutrik sockets.
And go with a amp rack.

Thanks for the message. The amps will go on for service and I'll probably keep both systems as well.

The DB Tech name doesn't hold so well with a lot of the cheaper bits they make now too and it would be nice to have something with a little more low end power and solid construction. So an upgrade that I can charge a bit more for.

Amps option is a no go, it's the simplicity of the rig that I love.

How about D&B C7?

It’s about £1000 a box and the P1200 amps can be had for about £600 each.

Get 2 tops 2 subs 2 amps then buy the extra pair of subs when you have a bit more £££

Will put you in a completely different bracket.

Thanks Jace.

That is not a bad idea really in general, the name would speak for itself. I have considered that before, my main system is Ohm I love the 218s but less so the tops and neither are compact. I actually use NCA A2D2 top boxes on top of Ohm 218s as my preferred combo but obviously that is less hirable.

Six boxes of D&B would properly get me more work, they are fairly compact cube boxes if I remember right?

80% of the work is the smaller active system for under 150  / 20% rave systems for 500 odd with either 4 or 6 218s. Maybe the D&B would fill the gap.

We use C7 for loads of stuff, Its a bit older but a fantastic system for good consistent sound.

The C7 tops are square, the subs are rectangle but the same width so it stacks nice.

D&B is very hirable, I have a fair pile of it now and it's all paid for itself time and time again. But it isn't really free party / rave hirable.

If you are going down that road with cube boxes, then D&B C7 is a great system no doubt about that, and will fit your needs good.
But there is also Dynacord XA2, Cobra 2 or even better, Cobra 4.
XA2 would be a step down from D&B C7 but cheaper. Cobra 2 would be equal. And Cobra 4 would be a step up from C7/equal to D&B C4 but with a bit better LF respons.

Biggest advantage with Dynacord would be that you don't need to use specific amps. It's totally up to you 🙂

Thanks for this.

I have plenty of powerlight amps and some FFA's so maybe that is a option. I'll do some research.

Edit: taking into account lack of rave appeal mentioned above maybe the C7 / Dynacord isnt my best bet. That is most of my work.

Quote D&B is very hireable

Going off at a bit of a tangent, but is it common that you get bookings based solely on the brand of gear that you use?

All my work comes either from people who I have worked with recommending me to others, or people at gigs asking for a business card. Not once has anyone questioned, let alone been put off by the gear that I use.

Not usually, but I definitely get people asking what the kit is. I dont feel it has lost me work ever, but I think better known brands might gain me more in future.. DB Tech feels entry level , although saying that the Fortyline sounds pretty good IMO.

I have been the happy owner of DB tech before. But shifted to RCF. Easyer to rent more boxes around here, if more is needed.

Anyways... I used the DVX D12 amongst others. Insane little thing! Not at all entry level. But I know what you are trying to say. The name isn't up there with the big boys Smile

Matt, have you not considered an RCF system yourself?
They have a big range of active cabs and there seems to often be second hand systems coming up.
I was always under the impression that DB Technologies was always basically marketed as RCF's budget brand.
Decent enough but cabs that were often made in India or China rather than Italy (So more built down to a cost).
I know a couple of people who have DB Tech gear and seem very happy with it but it's always seemed a bit 'Cheesey' to me.
The type of kit your likely to see being used around a pool at a holiday resort.
If you do like the sound of what you have then surely RCF should at least be on your shortlist.
Cheers, Chris.
