ive never quite understood how comp drivers can sound so harsh (and to me a lot of them do) as effectivley it is just a driver inside a small ported chamber, is it because of the high compression ratio or something else?

You're a big man, but you're in bad shape. With me it's a full time job. Now behave yourself.

metal diaphragm innit mate, its one of the only things HiFi nutters say that I take any notice of: different materials have different sounds, metal diaphragms sound metallic, kevlar cones sound a bit plasticky, piezo tweeters are hard and crystalline like what's inside. And paper sounds smooth and soft. i share your dislike of big comps, never heard one I really liked yet. But for SPL per watt and ease of design, they win.

What you on about then Deadbeat? You typed an unrequited asterisk...If it's something I can do with a bit of wood and a piece of string I'll have a go :)

Even easier than wood and string - bung a spare bit of open-cell foam or towel in and line the sides paying careful attention to the mouth. For a quick test, just wrap a towel round the inside of the mouth. If you're really interested, cut a foam plug the shape of the horn and insert. You can also try it with normal horns that 'honk' too much.

If the mouth ends too sharply, whip out your router and sander, but that's another story.
The reason why a compression driver can sound harsh is down to a variety of things:
It could be the horn
It could be the diaphragm material (metal vs phenolic, different breakups, etc)

Ease of design? Well, that's easy when you buy your own horn and driver.
But designing a good sounding horn is about as hard as doing a phase plugged mid.
And a good sounding horn is what makes all the difference (to an extent).

Actually, if you think about it, compression drivers are actually just diaphragms (which act more pistonically blah blah) on a phase plug with a high compression ratio (usually a tangerine but sometimes an axial, then usually that assembly leads onto a throat tube with gently sloping sides. You know, the martin F2 '5.5" compression driver' was actually a 12" driver that was in a big compression driver type enclosure. In fact compression drivers do have t/s, it's just a matter of getting them. You can actually model a compression driver + horn on hornresp, and the power response is accurate.

Then there's the planar wave and directivity thing.
Away on extended leave.

With my mt121's nearly finished it time to look at the top end for them. I have decided on having a  12" 6" 1" combo the quest was to build a 6" horn to go into the space above the 12" section.

So after a few hours of coming up with ideas and working out size, length, and angles i set about making a wooden mould.

Once the mould was made i got out the fiber glass and started to mould the shape.

Filler was then added to smooth out the flare. And the first coat of under coat added.

All i need to do now is take some plots and adjust the mould as needed. Then make a cast from this mould to make more.

looks great mate, hot damn that's a lot of compound mitreing, how did you arrive at that shape? yours seems to have ended up a lot deeper than the one i did, what frequencies are you gonna run thru it? mine goes 800-5k.
