Think I'll take a look at my offline copy of Speakerplans.com, with all the Cow and Rhino plans just for fun.

Don't worry, I switched the light off, closed the vault door, and put closed sign on it, after having quick look again.. ![]() |

Scoopology - Never ending saga where dark, light and rainbow forces colides and throws
on each other to death.. and than ..reincarnate. :)To "explain" Rhino/MS MK's storry in short. Once upon a time there was raised hype around "mini-scoops" but there was no miniscoop plans available for free. As this is/was one of forums where sound enthusiasts come to discuss/experiment about designs, considering "wished" size of cabinet I have published MS-18MK1 (large chamber version) as experiment based on miniscoop layout but with bassreflex approach rather than classic horn-theory. Just day or two later Mykey have released his Rhino MK1 plans. Booth MS and Rhino have been tried with few drivers and conclusion was that designs like this can play very low but due to large chamber and insufficient "cone control" booth of them require "monster" driver unit to achieve extreme SPL-s without mechanical damage on speaker voice coil. With proper driver (like certain T.Max models) they booth will do job nice and safely... but that is another story now. Due to this problem and very specific driver requirements Mykey have designed Rhino MK2 and MK3 to enable much wider selection of 18" units for safe use in "miniscoop" for DIY users depending either on available units or on intended use or music gender. That was fine and many users have reported very pleasing results with many different of-shelf drivers in those two versions of Rhino cabinets. But... due to some repetitive discussions/accusations , respect/non-respect, ..flaming/pissing on forums Mykey have decided to pull off plans from public domain (most likely to "get out a bit" and save some nerves .. )..Shortly after that there was constant inquires (mainly from new members) for Rhino MK123 plans and also my private mail was occasionally filled with questions about possibility to modify MS-18 into smaller chamber version. Considering that Rhino versions are already tested/proved and people are familiar with concept I have designed my two versions of MS - MK2 and MK3 which are basically very very close by design to Rhino (Mk2 have a bit larger chamber than Rhino Mk2 .. MK3 is almost identical) I have plans of all versions of Rhino but it would be shameless/ignorant and unfair to just re-post them somewhere. So MS-18Mk2/3 are made in time when Rhino's was not more officially available. .. In my approach I have aimed to make plans with basically same performance but maximally adjusted dimensions/parts size to be easy as possible for DIY (many parts share same dimensions, "rounded" sizes .. etc.) When properly built and loaded with same 18" driver difference in design and performance of Rhino MK3 and MS-18Mk3 is so minor that it would be hard /impossible to measure/hear that. ... Stipe :) P.S .. Through last year I have made drawings for new 18" classic family: full sized scoop, medium scoop and mini scoop all of them can accept even deepest chassis drivers and can be made just regular way or can have built in throat tuning system. Chamber of those new scoops can be also easily altered (reduced) post build. So now new tunable throat miniscoop may be all-in-one replacement for all versions and possible "intermediate" versions from MS-Mk2 to beyond Mk3. P.S. Unfortunately, despite the fact that I really secretly love scoops (with all their advantages/disadvantages) and also love all DIY community "elevated state of emotions" when scoops are on topic... I do not like to participate in -"wars" so I have decided to hold those out of public domain too ![]() Eventually I will make them officially available some day for some lil fee (or pack or two of beer.. you know,.. all in attempt to become obscene rich ) Edited by staiper - 31 January 2012 at 4:50pm |
