I get a more open sound out of my horn than I would with a little horn in the Co-ax's. I prefer to have a horn that you have to turn down. The Horn is the same as I used to use in the Reflekta MX900.

The Grills aren't finished yet, they'll be a lot brighter after tomorrow, as will the Horns.

As a DJ I prefer active, I feel I have the control of them, and I know there won't be a single bit of delay between them and FOH, so I know my mixes will be ok.

not wishing to be argumentative - but surely as electronic signals travel at [~] the speed of light, there would be no measurable delay between active, and passive... and you will probably find that the foh IS delayed on most systems.. most modern rigs involve horns and delays by design, and any distance between your position and the FOH, and the monitors providing they are at a different location, will cause two different delays relative to your ears And regardless of that, it doesn't matter, main thing is your monitors are are close to as possible to your decks time, not FOH! That's what you are mixing. |

Interesting comments about active or passive. Here's what I think. I only assume that a monitor has to be flat, and if you can achieve that with a passive x/o, then you've cracked it. A sound isn't purer just because it's active. Some of the best sounds you'll ever here in Hi Fi are through a passive x\o. With a multi section PA and taking into account the power, active systems are essential. Regarding monitors, You can't think of being active so that you can tweak the balance. The only balance needed is a flat response, or as near as you can get it. For those who think Monitors should be active, I would like to hear why.

great job Tony!
I did something similar for a little coaxial driver a while ago: http://forum.speakerplans.com/topic69822_post694678.html#694678 I had a load of 6.5mm plywood leftover from another job and so I kerfed it to get it to bend tight enough. Did you use multiple layers of thinner plywood? 3mm? |

Just took a look at your cabs, great job, I remember seeing them first time around. I actually used 8mm Flexi-ply. The original idea was to wrap the first layer and then use two sheets a fibreglass, and stick the last sheet on to the glass. After the first sheet went on, I became aware that it was very taught and the resonance was high. I was really surprised, Anyway, I thought I would take a chance just to see how it would sound. The next day, I had second thoughts because the grain around the tight bit at the back seemed to be opening up, so I thought I would then paint it with Resin, which would cure it. And then I thought, why not fiberglass the inside, so that's what I did. It is a really solid structure now with just 8mm ply and glass. I had also taken out all the screws around the top and bottom so that I could Radius the cab and I didn't bother putting them back in. Internally, the sides are bonded with the top, so I'm not expecting anything bad. A good Skeletal frame helps.

Are we talking about active crossovering versus passive crossovering or powered speakers versus unpowered speakers?
