Hi Speakerplans 👋 🌊
Long time listener first time caller, I've decided to build our own soundsystem for our 500 cap warehouse venue after spending £8k renting PA over the last year. I'm undecided currently between three options, and wondered if anyone could shed some light for me on the two main queries before proceeding to commission cabinet fabrication, which are... would Plan 1 (raised and tilted 50 degrees) be sufficient for a 500 capacity warehouse space with a dancefloor area of 11x22m (see photo below) and if not, which of the Plan2/3 is the better system for the wide variety of music we support (Dance, Live Music, DnB, Dub, Techno, Full range) Plan 1 - 4 x Hogs (Rog) with V18-1000 / Oberton 18XB1500 2 x Turbosound TMS4 (45-18khz) Plan 2 - 4 x Hogs (Rog) with V18-1000 / Oberton 18XB1500 4 x HD15 with PD154/ Kappa Pro LF 15 2 x Turbosound Flashlight TFS-780 (150-20khz) Plan 3 - 4 x Hogs (Rog) 2 x ES18 (Electrikal) 2 x Turbosound TFL-760H (180-20khz) Edited by flwarehouse - 18 April 2020 at 1:53pm |

We have used 4 different systems in the venue total, ranging from most recent to last:
4 x Martin Audio SHX218 6 x Martin Audio WPC Line Array (This has been the best sounding system for obvious reasons, line array, intelligent system and doesn't need to be spanked hard to deliver crystal audio across the dancefloor, great low range response that drops off towards the back of the dancefloor and doesn't bleed terribly in a warehouse environment with fairly local residential neighbours) 4 x L' Acoustics SB28 4 x L'Acoustics Arcs II (Great sound, a step up musically from the usual ranges delivered by previous soundsystems, more response and punchy but bright sound) 4 x Void Stasys 218 2 x Void Vantage (Good delivery for the faster more aggressive music styles like DnB & Techno, more boomy sound than any others) 4 x Super Scoops (Rog) V18-1000 18" 2 G-Sub - Collosus XB 18" 1000 4 x MT121 - PD182 & Beyma cp755nd (Good bass response but poor quality mid-top section and dispertion, bleed worst of the lot, although these were earlier days when we didn't impose any real sound management or restriction / limiting.) Hate to break your bubble, but Line Array system does not sound better than point source... But if its deployed correct, it can sound really good. Have a look at Danley boxes. That is some serious good sounding enclosures... Waaay better than any Line Array i have heard. My point is, dont get dazzled because something is a line array system. Point Source has proven many times, to be better :)

do you want to fly a system and leave it there all the time. or have something you can move around the room for different events?

Sit tight for a bit. Bit later in the year there will be a lot of good deals on second hand gear unfortunately.

Move around, as it's a freerunning academy in the daytime. Also looking for something small and nimble but classic sound (hence my build suggestions) as will occasionally will be doing smaller shows, particularly after the current pandemic.

It was just one of the factors, for a longer surface area dancefloor the line array has a better dispersion than any of the other mid tops we've used.
Danley boxes are lovely, I've heard them a few times, at Glastonbury and up close for a few Electrikal dances. Sadly outside of our price range, and not a DIY build enthusiast but if I had the budget these would be our immediate choice.

^^This, rather than having having cabs built and/or trying to source rare cabs I'd wait it out for a decent turnkey system, it'll be much easier and probably cheaper than trying to source/build and integrate old pro mid tops and diy bass cabs. To your answer your original question though, yes, plan 1 would give the required SPL, dispersion may be a problem though with only one top per side.

By your own admission the Martin system with bass reflex subs was the best sounding but none of your planned builds include them, what's up with that?
Bass reflex might be boring but they are the most versatile box and those same super performance drivers the big name brands use are available to the DIY market. Subs are the easiest to build too, as long as the cabinets compliment the drivers no real knowledge is needed to get lots of lowend output, tops on the other hand are bloody hard to do well and the design used should be selected based on the room dimensions and system layout. If you have a wide area to cover a vertical array is the way to go, if it's more narrow and deep point source will work better. Diying a multi box array would be exceedingly complicated and not a beginners project but there is another option... a column array. There are loads of mini versions of these on the market now that wouldn't be suitable here but scaled up a bit it becomes a viable DIY option, I'm thinking something along the lines of the SLS Audio LS8695.. now owned by Dolby Labs. |

What Conanski and Cris said, build some well thought out 218 reflex bass cabs, easy to do and you don't need the latest most powerful drivers, just build enough that you are not driving them to death, there are some really good cheaper 18" drivers on the market that work perfectly, reflex will give you the widest band and help in getting mid/tops that come down low enough to not need kick bins, as Chris said there may well be some bargains very soon so it maybe worth waiting, however condition and knowing their history dictates whether they are a bargain or not, a good reflex system always does the job if designed and built well and set up properly, don't over think it.
